Captain Andrew

Before Christmas last year I came across a flight school offering gift certificates for introductory flights. It struck me as a great present for Andrew! Although it was a Christmas present we only got round to organising it a few weeks ago and booked to fly today.

We had superb weather for the flight and had some fantastic views over the city. We took off from the Chicago Executive Airport, just 20 minutes from our apartment. The flight took us east to Lake Michigan and then south past the Loop to Soldier Field. We then turned around and flew up the shore to the Baha'i Temple, and finally came back to land.

Andrew got to do pretty much everything: taxi, take off, flight and lining the plane up for landing. You couldn't wipe his smile off afterwards - I think there was a bit of an adrenaline rush :) I had a great time in the passenger seat taking lots of video and photos!

That looks awesome! Looks like you couldn't have picked a much better day for weather, although I can't understand why there isn't any snow around and the lake isn't frozen over...

Did the renegade trainee pilot try any stunts whilst flying (eg. loops/barrel rolls/buzzing Sears Tower)? I'm sure he was just itching to throw that plane around a bit. :)

So, when are you jumping in the pilot's seat Elsie?

No, the lake only freezes in winter - it does get warm in Chicago, truly!

Trainee pilot did look keen on trying some fancy maneuvers. He was pretty disappointed to have the controls taken away just before landing :) The airspace we were allowed in was pretty limited - need to be 500 ft above the water, a certain distance from Wrigley Field and the Sox stadium due to games, 2000 ft above downtown but not more than 3000 ft above ground, all in all a very narrow band to play in!

I'll jump in the pilot's seat when I manage not to crash on flight simulator :)

Oh I've been wondering how that went. I'm glad it was so fun! Cool pictures too!
